Program
Overview
Our new curriculum is called Reading Explorers, a research-based program
that provides structure and materials to support young readers and
writers. Students will have the opportunity to build literacy skills through
reading, writing, word work activities and a home connection. The lessons
are book specific and stress good comprehension skills, oral and written
communication skills, and all leaning modalities using developmentally
appropriate fiction and non-fiction genres. We will be using the Start-Up
Phonics with our first grade students, the PathFinders with second and third
grade students, and Reading TrailBlazers with fourth and fifth grade
students.
Start-Up Phonics
Lessons for kindergarten and first grade students
will:
Build a foundation for successful phonemic awareness and phonics instruction
Explicitly teach short vowels and consonants
Support and motivate all learners
PathFinders
Lessons for second and third grade students will:
Provide support in listening skills, reading comprehension, reading fluency and phonetic awareness
Allow students a positive reading experience
Build confidence
and improve classroom performance
Reading TrailBlazers
Lessons for fourth and fifth graders will:
Emphasize comprehension strategies, multiple writing types, and reading for meaning and fluency
Practice using higher order thinking skills to problem solve
Build confidence and improve students' test-taking abilities
